Picture this; endless lines of agave, colorful banners and live music. That’s what it’s like visiting the city of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico. This small Mexican town packs a big punch and is famously known for being the birthplace + production place of Tequila (the alcohol we have a love/hate relationship with). The small town is located on the outskirts of the state of Jalisco and is bustling with tourism and things to do! One of the more well know activities is Tequila Tours. I’m going to list out all the reasons why you should make Tequila, Mexico your next travel destination.
1. Go on a Authentic Mexican Tequila Tour
You can’t visit this quaint little town without taking a Tequila tour. On the tour, you learn all about the production of Tequila while also taste testing the different types of Tequila such as Anejo, Reposado, Cristalino. Many tours will take you to different distilleries in town where you can see first hand how they create this sophisticated Mexican alcohol.
TRAVEL PRO TIP: There’s even a Jose Cuervo Tequila Train that takes you to the city! How awesome is that?! 🙂 You can find more info on the Tequila train here.
2. Get Beautiful Views of the Agave Fields
As you drive or take a train ride into the city, you will fall in love with the beautiful landscape of agave plants. Agave plants can be seen for miles as many of the local distilleries use them for their production. If you are lucky, your tour will even let you snag some photos in the agave fields! You can’t miss this activity when visiting the city of Tequila.
3. Visit the Famous “El Guero” Cantaritos Bar/Restaurant
This bar is awesome! They specialize in a drink made with…you guessed it TEQUILA! They’re also known for serving it out of Mexican clay jars called cantaritos. The drink is made up of: Lemon Juice, Salt, Tequila, Orange/Grapefruit Juice and Squirt yummy. This bar also serves XXL jars where they add up to 3 bottles of tequila in one cantarito (sounds like a good time). Cantaritos El Guero is highly rated on trip advisor and a staple when visiting the city of Tequila. You can check them out Here.
4. Wander Around the “Pueblo Magico”
Once you’re in the town or “plaza” of Tequila, you’ll find yourself surrounded by various street vendors and shops all selling some beautiful Mexican crafts. They call it “pueblo magico” which translates to Magic Town. You can take hours strolling through the shops and snag some unique items or simply take in all the artsy decor. You’ll also find some delicious food places all around the city with live music. You definitely do not want to miss out on this.
5. Visit the UNESCO World Hertiage Site of “Parroquia Santiago Apostol” Catholic Church
There is a UNESCO world heritage site right in the center of the city of Tequila. It was constructed back in 1649 and has some amazing architecture. You can spend some time inside looking at the different artifacts.
That sums up the top 5 fun things to do when visiting the city of Tequila, Jalisco. I hope one day you get to visit this “magical” city 🙂
