I never imagined I’d ever visit such an amazing cultural site such as the Batu Caves in Malaysia. The Batu Caves are visited by thousands of tourists each year for its rainbow colored stairs, gold Hindi statue and the limestone caves. More importantly, it’s a religious site for Hindus and has various shrines erected inside. Its grounds are used as a meeting site for Hindu festivals throughout the year as well. Yet, when I visited the Batu Caves there was no festival goers, just a lot of tourists and a whole lot of monkeys!
Where are the Batu Caves?
The Batu Caves are located in Malaysia and can be reached by car. We used Grab (Asia’s “uber”) and it was just a short 20 min ride away from the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur.
What are the Batu Caves?
The Batu Caves are actually considered on of the Wonders of World and for good reason! You will be in awe of the gigantic gold Hindu Statue and rainbow colored stairs. Once you climb up the stairs, you’ll enter the caves where you can walk through and admire the various Hindu Shrines and the limestone architecture. P.S. Don’t worry, once you get up the steep stairs you can relax inside the caves where it’s a lot cooler in temp 🙂
What’s up with all the monkeys?
If you’re afraid of monkeys, I do not recommend the Batu Caves for you. This place is crawling with them! Seriously, from the moment you start your trek up the stairs to the caves, you’ll see monkeys left and right. I’m no monkey expert, but after some research I found out these are long-tailed macaques. Seemed like all they wanted was food or water so you’ll definitely see some tourists be flocked by these monkeys. I do think they are harmless (but never let your guard down with any wild animal). My rule of thumb is to leave the wild animals alone and they shouldn’t bother you. It made the Batu Caves more of an “experience” with the monkeys all over the place lol The photo below is an up close shot I managed to snag on my way up the stairs.
Is it worth visiting?
I 100% recommend visiting the Batu Caves if you’re ever in Malaysia! Pictures just don’t do this place justice. The limestone caves were really cool and the overall experience was really fun with all the monkeys everywhere. Places like this deserve to hold the title of “Wonders of the World” because there’s not many places like it. It’s unique and definitely should be added to your travel to-do list. 🙂
